The port of Marsaxlokk in the development of floating solar project

23 May 2024

The port of Marsaxlokk has launched a strategy in its territorial waters, a preliminary market consultation (PMC) has been initiated aiming at asses the market readiness for nearshore floating solar technology projects, specifically photovoltaic farms. This initiative will help evaluate investor interest and support technical studies for a potential competitive call for offers.

The plan is to connect these floating solar farms directly to the national grid at Delimara. Malta's strategic location and high solar irradiation make it ideal for solar installations, offering a prime opportunity to demonstrate the commercial viability of offshore floating solar farms. Additionally, the Maltese Ministry is developing a policy for investments in offshore renewable energy systems, including floating wind farms in the country's exclusive economic zone (EEZ), with a draft policy launched for public consultation last year and the final policy expected to be published soon.
