The Port of Barcelona received the first Onshore Power Supply (OPS) substation

24 May 2024

The Port of Barcelona has achieved a major milestone in its Nexige project by receiving the first Onshore Power Supply (OPS) substation. This OPS system enables the provision of electricity to container ships while they are docked, allowing them to shut down their engines and therefore decrease emissions.

A substation is being installed at the Hutchison Ports BEST terminal in Barcelona, consisting of six modules and can connect two container ships simultaneously. This installation is part of the dock's electrification process, which includes civil works, cable deployment, and terminal expansion. Over the next four months, the OPS connection will be completed, allowing ships to connect to the dock's equipment. Tests will be conducted, aiming to start supplying clean energy with 100% renewable origin certification by July 2024. OPS is a step forward in the port's efforts to establish a network of connections for ships, contributing to environmental sustainability.
