Port of Rotterdam in the construction of the second electrolyser on the Maasvlakte

The Port of Rotterdam has announced that an electrolyser will be built on the Maasvlakte to convert wind farm energy into green hydrogen. The Port Authority has reserved space for this project, allowing for an electrolyser capacity of up to 1 gigawatt (GW). The initiative includes a 2 GW offshore wind farm, a 50 MW floating offshore solar farm, and an electrolyser, with the wind farm set to be operational by 2029.

The Port of Rotterdam Authority has reserved a site next to TenneT’s future 380 kilovolts (kV) Amaliahaven high-voltage substation for the tender winner, allowing for up to 1 GW of electrolysis. This site will receive the 2 GW direct current cable from the IJmuiden Ver Beta wind farm. Green power converted into hydrogen will bypass the electricity grid, avoiding additional strain. The site is conveniently located next to a new hydrogen pipeline, enabling efficient hydrogen transport to clients, and is also close to the Evides water supply network.
