Green corridor between the Port Authority of Bilbao and Portsmouth International

08 July 2024

The Port Authority of Bilbao and Portsmouth International are collaborating to enhance the growth of freight and passenger transport between their respective ports. A new Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) will enable them to exchange information and collaborate on actions to ensure sustainable, efficient, and speedy multimodal port operations.

Bilbao is currently advancing the BilbOPS project, an initiative aimed at electrifying its docks that handle frequent traffic. This project will supply vessels with renewable electricity from the onshore grid during their port stays. Portsmouth International Port’s Sea Change project will design, build, and operate an onshore power system at its three busiest docks. This agreement will enhance inter-port cooperation, particularly in technology and infrastructure, with a focus on providing onshore power supply to vessels operating at both ports.
