Port of Klaipėda to introduce hybrid pilot boats and hydrogen-powered waste collection vessel to fleet

02 July 2024

The Port of Klaipėda has announced plans to introduce a hydrogen-powered waste collection vessel and two hybrid pilot boats by the end of next year. The hybrid pilot boats will feature a diesel-electric drive and will be equipped with search and rescue equipment, an onboard crane, a rescue platform, and searchlights with integrated thermal cameras.

Electric charging for boats will be installed at the Port Authority’s new fleet base and near the planned new administration building. The pilot boats will be using electricity for manoeuvres within the port. However, they will be switching to diesel engines for higher speeds, especially when sailing out to sea beyond the port gates. This measure will contribute positively to the reduction of emissions at the Port of Klaipėda.
